I am an Elgin based artist who abandoned painting at 18 and then picked it up
again as if my life depended on it at age 39 in 2020. In a way, my life does depend on it. I can’t imagine not creating.
I attended 3 years of lessons with Cathy Milner at the Stables Art Studio near Klapmuts, where I rediscovered and newly discovered various mediums and techniques. My most explored mediums are oil on canvas, oil on glass, ink on photographic paper and monoprints.
I have been part of various group exhibitions and some of my work is currently on display at the Stanford Studio and Art Gallery.
The golden thread for me is wanting people to pause, reflect and consider how they experience the world. I feel that as a species we are all powerful and we often use that power to destroy. If we were to slow down, practice compassion and stop competing, we would use this power to create a world where beauty is all that matters.
I have this macabre and titillating obsession with what the world might look like in 10 or 20 years. I imagine that humans will be living in glass-house-like spaces, having been forced to bring nature indoors for the sake of our survival. It is at once a dark concept while being almost utopian, as glass houses are so painfully beautiful. It also hints at the fragility of humankind. I find that this interest in where nature meets man-made structures permeates my work as it does my mind.
